Clinical

You will attend clinical in an area hospital. Preconference will be from 7:00 to 7:30 am. You will provide patient care from 7:30 to 11:00. Postconference will be from 11:00 to 12:00. Please bring your book Critical Thinking by Winningham and Preusser to post conference. You will be working on case studies in the conferences.* Some sections may have evening clinical and the times will be different in that case.

Your clinical experience will include time on a medical unit, a surgical unit, and in the operating room and outpatient surgery. You may also spend a day in the GI Lab if available.

The clinical portion of the syllabus includes the Weekly Evaluation Form which is filled out by your clinical instructor on a weekly basis. You will read it and comment on it on a weekly basis too. The Final Evaluation Form is filled out by the instructor at the end of the class.

This part of the syllabus also contains Clinical Preparation Sheets. You will receive your patient assignment the day before clinical. You are to complete the clinical preparation sheet before Wednesday morning. The last step listed on the clinical preparation sheet is to map your patient. This is to be done after you have cared for the patient. See Guidelines for Clinical Mapping in this section of the syllabus.

You will also do one major Care Plan on a medical patient and one on a surgical patient. You do not have to map the patients that you do the care plans on. The major Care Plan forms are in this portion of the syllabus as well as guidelines that your instructor will use for evaluating them. There are 3 care plans included so that one can be used for practice.

There is also a requirement of 20 hours of Community Service to be completed by May of your graduation year. You may begin to do some hours of community service during this course. If you do, please submit your hours to your clinical instructor.
