(Preaching)
John Ashcroft as the nominee,
Looked out upon their smiling faces.
He met the gazes, observed the spaces
Between the old men's cackle.
He hid his agenda of his hatred ---
Oblique suggestions and he waited.
He polarized the liberal leaders ---
Static-humming big chest-beaters ---
Freshly day-glow'd factory cheaters
(salaried and money grubbing).
He titillated men-of-action ---
Right wing warming, hands still rubbing
Of the parts they never mention.
He pacified the ones not suffering,
South not beaten, one-line joker ---
T.V. documentary makers
(overfed and undertakers).
Sunday paper opinion players ---
Family-scarred and women-haters.
Then he called his boss down to the stage
And he looked at all the friends he'd made.
