Jeffrey
Dedicated to former Enron Chief Operating Officer, Jeffrey Skilling
(Sung to the tune of "Lucille" by Kenny Rogers)
Guest song parody by P. Kumar
Foreword

Congressman Billy Tauzin (R-LA) was heard humming this song as he watched the Senate hearing on Feb 26, 2001.  With all due respect to Kenny Rogers’ muse Lucille, especially her constitutionally guaranteed presumption of innocence, nothing in this song is to suggest that she had any previous knowledge of the dire financial situation of the farm when she walked out on her husband and children.  Indeed, we stand by the statements she made on Larry King Live that when she left in late summer for purely personal reasons, she believed that the farm and the household were in fine shape.  She had no knowledge of the fact that the hedges planted around the crops would not provide adequate protection against the torrential rainfall and the consequent liquidity problems.  The runs, which killed the kids, came from their playing in dirty water after she had left.

As sung by Congressman Billy Tauzin (R-LA):

(instrumental intro)

On a panel in DC,
In front of my committee,
He swore in and waived the Fifth
A big mess to unravel.
So I pounded the gavel,
Sat down and kicked off the hearing.
When the mike finally found him,
He said, I am no victim,
‘Cause I’ve cashed out a few mils in options.
Became a short seller,
But here ever after,
I’ve whatever I’ve squirreled off-shore.

On the big screen I saw Ken,
And I closely watched him,
Last week he’d taken the Fifth
He came up to Jeffrey,
Who sat there beside me.
He held out no donations,
His wallet ain’t bulging.
So far as I’m judging,
I knew my soft money was dead.
But he started talking,
His net worth was breaking,
Lay turned to Skilling and said:

"You picked a fine time to leave me Jeffrey,
With four hungry Raptors and stock’s falling freely.
Wrote off the J-Block, lived through the Dabhol.
But this time the market’s gonna flee,
You picked a fine time to leave me, Jeffrey."

After he left us,
I pulled out more DASH’s
I thought how he’d made him look duped.
The line of my questionin’
Was beginning to do him in.
The answer was “I don’t recall.”
Contempt of Congress,
Despite last year’s largesse.
Or perhaps even perjury,
I’d have to charge him.
Cause the words that Lay told him,
Kept coming back time after time:

You picked a fine time to leave me, Jeffrey,
With four hungry Raptors and stock’s falling freely
Wrote off the J-Block, lived through the Dabhol
But this time the market’s gonna flee,
You picked a fine time to leave me, Jeffrey.
