The National Science Foundation and Oakton Community College, in partnership with Maine Township High School District 207 and Niles Township High School District 219, offer this prestigious and innovative support program to high school and Oakton students who pursue and earn degrees in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics(STEM)
 

STEM Enrichment Program

(INFORMATION FOR OAKTON STUDENTS)

Are you interested in degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), but need to strengthen your English language skills to succeed in college? Do you need to pass elementary algebra before advancing to college algebra? The Stem Enrichment Program at Oakton Community College is designed to help you improve your mathematics, English and study skills. Supported by the National Science Foundation, this program is limited to 40 participants each fall. 


How you benefit
Participants in the Stem Enrichment Program can expect these benefits:
  • Improved math, English and study skills
  • Tuition refund (3 credit hours) upon completion of program
  • College credit
  • Mentoring for academic and career success by Oakton's quality faculty


Who may apply:
Current Oakton students interested in pursuing a STEM major are encouraged to apply.
Students should identify with one of the following groups:

  • Group I: Must take or retake MAT 052 in order to succeed in college algebra.
  • Group II: Demonstrate strong interest and/or success in STEM subjects, but must strengthen English language skills to succeed at college level. Students are placed into EGL 101, and are ready to take MAT 122 or higher-level math courses.


When to apply
Admission for the Program begins June 1 until all seats are filled. Submit application as soon as possible.

What to take in the summer

  • Students in Group I take MAT 052 and COL 101. 
  • Students in Group II take EGL 101 plus a college level course in Math, Chemistry, Engineering or Physics. Click here for a list of sample courses

  • August 23 - December 15, 2004
  • August 22 - December 14, 2005


How to apply
Current Oakton students submit the following:

  • Application for the Stem Enrichment Program (.pdf) (.MS-Word file)
  • A letter of recommendation from your Oakton teacher
  • A completed math and English placement test (if you have not done so)


If you have not yet done so, please arrange to take the necessary placement tests. Contact the Oakton’s Testing Center at 847-635-1939 for more information. Your application is incomplete without these placement tests.
