Frequently Asked Questions of the Peer Tutor Training Program

Q: When should I submit my application?
A: As soon as possible. Acceptance letters will be mailed beginning May 1 until all positions have been filled.
Q:When do I know if I am admitted into the Program?
A: After the application has been received, an interview will be scheduled. Within a week after the interview has been conducted and after May 1, the applicant will be notified of acceptance outcome.
Q: Can students who will still be in high school next year apply, as well as those who graduate this June?
A: yes
Q: What time does a peer tutor work each day?
A: The tutor schedule is to be determined based on tutor availability and student needs.
Q: How much time does a peer tutor work per week?
A: The maximum number of hours that the students can tutor is 15 hours. The minimum number of hours that the students must tutor is 3 hours.
Q: Where do we tutor?
A: In the Learning Center of Oakton’s Des Plaines campus.
Q: How much is the pay?
A: $6.5 per hour
Q: Do the students get paid for the training session(s)?
A: In the past, individuals who have not received a bachelor’s degree and are interested in tutoring at the Learning Center at Oakton are required to take a peer tutor training course for which they must pay to receive college credit. Only just recently after we were awarded the NSF grant has this policy been altered. So, we are currently working to determine how this change will affect the participants of the program.
Q: What time is the training each day?
A: Training will be held once a week with scheduled time to review materials online every day. The day and time of training is to be determined based on tutor availability and trainer availability.
Q: When does training occur?
A: Training occurs throughout the seven-week program. Each week the participants meet with the training instructor for anywhere between 1 – 2 hours. The date and time of training is to be determined based on tutor and trainer availability.
