The National Science Foundation and Oakton Community College, in partnership with Maine Township High School District 207 and Niles Township High School District 219, offer this prestigious and innovative support program to high school and Oakton students who pursue and earn degrees in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)

Peer Tutor Training Program

The Peer Tutor Training Program is designed to provide experience and training in the fundamental skills essential for successful tutoring. Participants learn techniques, methods and approaches that improve learning. Through readings, class discussion, case studies, journals, group work, activities and a practicum, participants distinguish the academic and personal skills that help students achieve their academic goals.

What does the Program offer?

  • Training in the learning and tutoring theories
  • Certification by the College Reading and Learning Association (upon completion)
  • Hourly pay


How does the Program benefit participants?

  • Strengthen knowledge of course content
  • Improves interpersonal communication skills
  • Learn techniques, methods and approaches that improve learning
  • Earn tutoring experience for teaching career


Who may apply?

  • Juniors and Seniors in high school
  • Students enrolled in AP Calculus or a higher level mathematics course
  • Students with an interest in pursuing a college major in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)

  • June 9-July 24, 2003
  • June 14-July 29, 2004 
  • June 13-July 28, 2005 
  • June 12-July 27, 2006 (limited to six participants)
